Announcing Sobelo Books!
(so below, or so bellow if your heart demands it)
Hello! We are co-founders L.C. Marino and L.P. Hernandez.
We began Sobelo recognizing the indie horror press landscape is crowded. We believe there is always room for decent, passionate people.
Our vision: Sobelo Books respects both the creator and the audience. For the creator, our financial processes are automated to the greatest extent possible, eliminating the possibility of mismanagement of payments. Our advances and royalty structure are comparable to established indie horror presses. Integrity matters, and business functions should not be a mystery.
How do we respect the audience? Keep reading...
What we want: In the short-term, our releases will be relaunches of previously published titles and titles that were slated to be published prior to press closures. In future submission calls, we’ll seek the stories only one person can tell. The subgenre of horror matters less than an uncanny, well executed exploration of it. This is how we respect the audience. We publish the stories only our authors can tell, a collaborative process at the center of which is voice. A book is an investment of both time and money. We respect that investment, and our goal as publishers and creatives is to partner with authors to develop and strengthen their voice.
Ethics: The foundation of a business relationship is trust, which we believe is earned and not freely given. Trust grows through collaboration and transparency. You’ve been frustrated watching presses promise more than they can deliver or align themselves with morally questionable people and ideals. So have we. That’s why we’re doing this.
We are: Retired and currently serving military officers who moonlight as horror authors.
Lucas is a writer, small business owner, and Doctor of Engineering. As a Coast Guard Officer, he served eight years at sea in support of Caribbean and Mediterranean Sea national strategic initiatives and led the service’s Engineering and Weapons school. After retirement, he served as a senior engineer for US Army watercraft and US Navy nuclear submarine programs before becoming a full time small business owner, professor, and writer. His published fiction includes Bury the Child, Burn the Girls, and Bless the Mother. He spends his days immersed in horror fiction and progressive metal while raising three teenagers with his wife in a pile of trees.
Les is an MBA and Project Management Professional. As a Medical Service Corps Officer in the Air Force, he has led teams of hundreds, deployed in support of Middle East peacekeeping operations as well as the federal COVID-19 vaccine distribution. His notable works of fiction include Stargazers, In the Valley of the Headless Men, and No Gods, Only Chaos. Les also hosts the Dog-eared Nightmares podcast, in which he interviews authors of well-loved horror fiction. He is a father, husband, and a dedicated metalhead.
Small presses we admire (a shortened list): Tenebrous Press, Ghoulish Books, CLASH Books, Cemetery Gates Media, Ghost Orchid Press, and Shortwave Publishing.
